Design for Connectivity in Portable Medical Devices

Connectivity is at the core of the devices transforming healthcare, yet interconnects – or, connectors – are often an afterthought. I-PEX offers MHF^® micro RF coaxial connectors connect antennas to radios while maximizing performance in minimal space for portable medical devices. We also provide vertical-mating CABLINE^®-UM micro-coaxial connector with ZenShield^® EMI shielding for medical equipment which requires straightforward device-to-device communication, portable diagnostic equipment.

Micro-Coaxial/Twinax Connectors

I-PEX CABLINE® and FPL micro-coaxial connectors are capable of handling high data rates such as USB® 3.1, ThunderboltTM3, eDP HBR3, PCIe Gen 3/4 and more. They support high power delivery and have the option of providing 360-degree EMC shielding. The cables can be bundled to make it easy to route them through narrow spaces and hinges. These connectors are ideal for connecting displays, camera modules, storage devices and other applications.

Wire-to-Board Connectors and Terminals

ISH® is a high heat/vibration resistant wire-to-board connector series. Horizontal, vertical, wire-to-wire and hybrid (with power terminals) types are available. Female terminals with the embedded spring provide superior contact reliability. ISFIT® is a solderless press-fit terminal with a unique design that includes a 4-point contact with an internal spring structure that provides low mating force and eliminates damage to the through-hole on the PCB. This terminal has excellent contact reliability with accurate center position alignment which helps reduce the workload of assembly operators, as well as improving the inspection process.

I-PEX's unique know-how for FPC connectors (MINIFLEX^® series) to prevent empty closure

"Empty-closure", a common occurrence in manufacturing and assembly, is the operation of an actuator without inserting an FPC into the connector. It can cause connector damage or incomplete mating when the FPC is subsequently inserted. This white paper introduces the "empty-closure" issue by using I-PEX's MINIFLEX^® series as an example, and how it is addressed, as well as the design know-how gained through analysis and calculation to ensure that the connector will function even if an empty closure occurs.
